The Johannes Rau Centre at the university of Wuppertal was officially opened in July 2022. A key part of the centre, which has since been used for conferences and events, is Johannes Rau's private library, which is housed in a prestigious library room. Many of the books on display here contain dedications from well-known personalities from politics, culture and society.

In order to give the interested public an insight into the centre and its library, the University Library will be offering guided tours on the following dates over the next few months:

  • Thursday, 20.02.2025 at 13:00
  • Thursday, 20.03.2025 at 13:00
  • Thursday, 24.04.2025 at 13:00
  • Thursday, 15.05.2025 at 13:00

The Johannes Rau Library

The Johannes Rau Library comprises the extensive private library of the politician Johannes Rau (1931 - 2006). It is the centrepiece of the Johannes Rau Centre, which was made possible with state, private and university funds and is located at the Freudenberg campus of the University of Wuppertal.

The Johannes Rau Library is housed in a newly constructed, representative and at the same time simple building, which was honoured with an award for its architecture. Glass corridors connect the library with the existing buildings of the Guest House and Library 7.

The library is intended to be a space for books and encounters: it was designed as both a reading room and a conference room.

Of the total collection of around 16,000 volumes, approximately 5,300 are directly accessible - around 2,600 of these books contain dedications by well-known personalities.

All books have been catalogued and can be used on site.
